Glitter surf punks Haley and The Crushers are catching a tide and swingin their way down to Colorado. We thought in proper CPRA fashion we would give their last album a review and help you get ready for their shows. Before I start this review here’s a list of their Colorado tour dates!

  1. Thurs. July 19 – Triple Nickel, Colorado Springs w/ Chief White Lightning (CA), Shiii Whaaa, Bad Year
  2. Fri. July 20 – Tooeys Off Colfax, Denver w/ Colfax Speed Queen
  3. Sat. July 21 – (Day Show) Mile High Parley Fest, Denver (UMS)
  4. Sat. July 21 – Pinball Jones Campus West, Fort Collins with Bad Decisions, BombThreat
  5. Sun. July 22 – Bar Bar, Denver (early show 6:30 pm)

The album is like riding a surfboard through the mind of woman starring in her own kick ass surf punk comic book. The fuzz is strong, the bass low, and drums straight out of a 60’s surf movie. Some of my favorites on the album are, ‘Backseat Love’, ‘Jewel Case’, ‘Jaywalkin’, and ‘Glitter and Glue’.

Overall this album is a blast to listen to. Their next album, “Cool/Lame is scheduled for release on 9/28/18! The range of influences is amazing. I hear punk era Blondie, the Go Go’s, and even the B-52’s. Here are some suggestions for Colorado acts they would pair well with The Dead End, Turbonaughts, Queen City Sinners, and Johnny Barber. So hit up their shows and get some merch to avoid shipping/handling!

Don’t forget Cool/Lame drops 9/28/18!

Being from Colorado I sometimes forget what it’s like to walk along the beach. The smell of the water and sand in between your toes. In truth I haven’t been to the beach since 2009, when I visited Laguna Beach on holiday. I have always admired the sounds of southern California, “Surf Music” as some people call it. Musical legends like the Beach Boys, Dick Dale, Surfaris, and the Ventures created a genre, still alive and kicking today. It created cheesy movies like “Beach Party” and “Gidget”. It lost its mass popularity to the British Invasion.

The indie surfer music scene has become very strong over the last 10 years. Bands like Bleached, Bombón, The Frights, and King Shelter have helped pushed surf music back into the limelight. Although one could say many rockabilly bands often mix in surf as well. This leads me into Lucy and The Rats. This band deserves your weekly download!

Lucy and The Rat’s recently snuck into CPRA, with their new self titled album. They ate all our cheese and are currently surfing in our dishwasher. Let’s get some background on these fashionable rats. Lucy Spazzy formerly of Australia’s The Spazzy’s, moved to England a few years back. There she met some new band mates and formed Lucy And The Rats. I’m now proud to say a huge Spazzy fan as well.

Lucy’s new band, Lucy and The Rats have taken a full 180 degree turn from the Spazzy’s brand and sound. Their experimental sound of grunge, punk and surf blend well in this amazing album. She took her Australian born surf music to the UK. I really enjoyed the song, “Pills”. The song led me into somewhat of relaxed daydream daze. It would pair well with a nice indica if you know what I mean. The vocals are haunting and rich.

I also enjoyed, “Girl”. The song is currently extremely popular in Spain. I can definitely see some Rockabilly guys gals enjoying this song. I really enjoyed the guitar riff and smooth melody. It reminded me of Duane Eddy & the Rebelettes. My favorite track is by far,  “Can’t Surf”. With an upbeat tempo, great drums, and sweet guitar solo. This song will have you, as the Mama’s and Papa’s coined it “California Dreamin”.

Lucy and the Rat’s are tapping into a new genre for the former Spazzy. Overall this album is amazing and a blast to sit back and listen to. The melodies sound pure and heartfelt. The album masterfully pieces 1960’s surf with today’s indie sound. So take our advice and hit that download link below! Also be sure to checkout Monster Zero Records. Monster Zero is signing some pretty fucking awesome bands!

King Shelter – Failure EP

King Shelter is a Salad Rock band from Los Angeles, who are previously known for their surfy pop punk hits.  Also featuring their “Holy Ghost” single, but may have moved on to reinvent their sound to a distorted, drippy, and riverbed sound.

The songs on the Failure EP reflect messages perseverance despite hardship and self-doubt. Holy Ghost and Failure  are the two strongest songs on the EP.  “Luv Sub” is a song about someone who is intimidated by another’s love interest, but is not in the social situation to win that person over. While “People Change”,  shows
a reluctance of a break up and not being able to let go. The only thing that brings this EP down is the end track, “….But Bye”, which seems a bit out of place. I think the band maybe felt they  the track needed to put it in.

Overall I give this EP an 87%. I cannot wait for the next to hear what’s coming from the band next.!
