Let’s take a minute to recognize one of my favorite small labels, “Monster Zero Records”. They are not owned by the devils at Warner, or Sony, CBS, etc. The folks on their promotion team are just like you and me. In fact per their website, “Monster Zero is a semi-unprofessional punkrock label, based in Innsbruck, Tirol, Austria, Europe. We like punk rock, pop punk, power pop and beer. We love Ramones and 5-Star hotels”. I like punk rock, beer and 5 star hotels!

They are professionals at getting music on their label out to the masses. We’ve done a ton of reviews from Monster Zero bands, see them here, https://coloradopunkrockarmy.com/tag/monster-zero/. Today I’m happy to show ex pop punks from Forli, Italy, Teenage Bubblegums. The ex pop punks recently dropped their 3rd release, “In Limbo” back in September. Let’s give it a run through!

The first track is “Quit It”. The buzz saw like notes come flying in before joining in a dark and delicious melody. The next song is “Burn”. The track continues the dark them. The backbeat is amazing. Ally’s vocals make it seem as if the listener is traversing through some creepy haunted house. The bass takes it even deeper.

“How I Feel” follows with some insane work on guitar and strong chords. As I listen I can feel a sense of anger, emptiness, and hope. The next song is “In Limbo”. We’ve all been there stuck waiting on a change, waiting for an outcome. It can plain suck sometimes! This track; however does not suck! Extremely dark power chords, combined with excellent drum work make this track stand out.

The track could easily be added to an industrial playlist without sounding out of place. “Never Again” is the follow up track. In starts with Ramonescore sound, yet more on the Horror/Lillingtons side. The simple lyrics seem to fly through like a witch on a broomstick, flying around, searching for kids to add to her brew.

The next track is “Full Of Agony”. This tracks belongs in a horror movie. It’s fast, fun, although the lyrics would suggest otherwise! “My Mind” follows by coming in with a kick ass buzz saw sound before joining in with the bass and drums. The next track is “High”. Damn this song makes me want to get high haha! It’s pogo worthy in my book, with its energetic and fast melody.

“Shame” follows up coming in with a siren like intro. I love this track. Goth and industrial fans this may also appeal to you as well. The lyrics are dark and powerful.

Flames, I was walking through the flames

I’ve got some poison running through my veins

And I’ve got so much shame

Flames, I was walking through the flames

My name is loneliness, where did I fail?

And I’ve got so much shame”

The last track on the release is “Compassion”. Have you ever tried to change someone for the better in a relationship? You don’t want to lose them, but also cannot make them love you. I’ve been there and never going back. This track is for all of us whom have undergone the emotions associated. A Ramonescore melody sets the theme before unleashing into onslaught of punk.

In conclusion Teenage Bubblegum’s, “In Limbo” is angry, emotional river, which pulls in different genres such as post punk, pop punk and industrial to an incredible punk rock combination. Be sure to pick this one up on vinyl for the purest recording here, https://teenagebubblegums.bandcamp.com/album/in-limbo

Sounds Like: Ramones, The Queers, NOFX, Aimless Again, and the The Lillingtons

CPRA fan favorites The Follow Ups are back again with a response to “The Half Of It”. The Ramonescore boys are dropping, “…Don’t Like You Either” on 10/31/2019. We couldn’t be more excited! This release is currently in pre-order stage. For the best copy be sure to pick it up on vinyl here, https://punkdisorderlyrecords.bandcamp.com/album/dont-like-you-either

Let’s take a look at the new record. The first track is, “Nancy Pelosi”. This song is hilarious with some great drum work, and pure Ramones core melodies. Damn do they know how to write tracks with addicting melodies. The next track is, “Love Letters From The Black Lagoon”.

Have you ever been in love with a person and felt not good enough? Based on the famous 1954 movie, “Creature From The Black Lagoon”. This track is written from the perspective of the monster.

“I’m lurking just below the surface,
Patiently waiting for you”

I love the theme and the killer backbeat. The midway guitar solo kills! The whoas are perfectly timed and well placed. “Crystal Lake” follows as a nod to, “Friday The 13th”. The track is like a frontal lobe assault of punk rock. If Jason Voorhees was a punk, this would be on his iPhone playlist. This track is not so much Ramonescore, yet still kicks ass with an original sound.

The next song is “Idiocracy”. The Ramonescore sound returns with a punch. This track may be related to the movie with the same name. Since the 1980’s the United States has become a “Consumer” based nation. Feeding off the nipples of corporate and political entities. We have allowed them to dictate morality and it will be the end of this country. Will you stand up or join the “Idiocracy”?  Don’t believe me? Just take a look at our president.

The next track is “Depth Of Character” comes flying in with a heavy bass line. Are we as humans losing our depth? Are we losing the “Humanist” inside all of us? This track will be a fun one in the pit! “Hey Ho (The Ballad Of Razor Ramon)” follows with definite tribute to the Ramones, “Blitzkrieg Bop” and wrestler, Razor Ramon aka Scott Hall

“Monsters” is next and from the “The Half Of It” EP. I still listen to this track frequently from my purchase back in 2019. The track is still a favorite, but I’m even more excited to listen on vinyl now. The minute I started the track I was like, “Hell Yeah”! “No Remedy” is the next song and also a favorite from, “The Half Of It”.

The last song is “Burn It Down”. Now I have to admit this song surprised me. This song seems to be one of the faster paced tracks. It’s sounds like 10 FT Pole with a skatepunk sound, leaving their traditional Ramonescore sound. I would love to hear more tracks like this! This is a perfect ending to an even better album!

Overall, The Follow Ups, “Don’t Like You Either” is 100% punk satisfying. Not only will it appeal to hardcore Ramones fans, but the pop/skate punks looking for something new. As stated above the record will be best listened to via vinyl. So hit that preorder link here, https://punkdisorderlyrecords.bandcamp.com/album/dont-like-you-either.

The Suck are set to release their new LP, “In-Cog-Neat-O” on 2/27/2019. This record is full of catchy tunes, wicked shreds, and fantastic drum work. Songs like ‘#YoureDead’, ‘Flip Cup’, and ‘El Cucuy’ have been stuck on repeat! ‘The Catfish’ is a hilarious song about a guy getting catfished and falling in love with said fish.

While not a raw as early horror punk, and more on the Nerd Punk side. This record is a blast to sing along with. It’s the perfect mix of horror and pop punk. I highly recommend picking this up on vinyl. You will also get the download codes, so you can keep that record in the plastic!

Blinding Eye Dog – “R’Lyeh Wasn’t Built In A Decade, Hon!”

10338804_10152439569104328_4560706065379727278_n

When writing album reviews sometimes I have the hardest time aligning a band with a certain genre. There are so many different genres of punk these days. It actually makes my job somewhat difficult. There’s post punk, hardcore, horror punk, pop punk, skate punk, and etc. Most people, not all have their own favorite genres.  My favorite genre is more of a classic sound like the Clash or The Damned.

So what happens when you find a band that combines so many different genres? You get Baltimore punks, Blinding Eye Dog! Their latest album, “R’Lyeh Wasn’t Built In A Decade, Hon” dropped on the 4th of July. This album struck me. I really wasn’t prepared for the onslaught of different genres.  Lately we’ve had our fair share of hardcore and pop punk.

So let’s check out some of my favorites from the album. “Icenian Queen” starts off the album with a horror punk sound. It reminds me a bit off the Damned’s, “Machine Gun Etiquette”. It has a great classic sound, with ripping shreds on guitar. “StupidVille USA, is next up on the track list.

29214333_10156180307854328_6834412618665426944_n

This song has a powerful message and sadly defines the state of the American union. How many bad things in small towns are swept under the rug? I really enjoy the progression and drums on this one. “Feel The Bern”, is up next. This song has a more hardcore edge to it and it kicks ass!

“Baltimore Lean”, a little slower, yet still has somewhat of a steely sound on bass. This one has some catchy lyrics to it and sounds a little like the New York Dolls. “Puppet Massacre’ is up next. This would be my favorite on the album. It’s more on the horror punk side. It has a kick ass guitar intro and wicked vocals.

“Tom Otter’s Lane”, is up next on the track list. This song sounds very Black Flag influenced. It fast and heavy. There’s a sweet little guitar shred towards the end. “ I Can’t Believe It’s Not Haggis”, rolls the album on. This one really sounds like a Cramps song at the intro. See where I’m going with this?

“Call of Cthulhu”, is up next on the album. This would be my second favorite song. This one has more of a Dead Kennedy’s sound. It’s catchy and drums pound. This one is a crazy pit waiting to happen. “Frankenhooker” comes in with a Dead Boys like sound. The lyrics are funny, better watch out for the Frankenhooker!

“Bong of Cthulhu”, well this one has more of metal sound. I guess this would be called, “Stoner Punk”? Haha. This one slows the record’s progression down, with a little funk. “Seed” is up next on the track list. This one really sounds like FEAR. It speeds the album back up.

“Grab Life”, is up next. It continues the speed with some great drums and excellent vocals. This is about the evil orange haired monster, “Führer Trump”. “Rush Hour” is up next. It continues the fast pace of the album. This is probably my third favorite song on the record. I love the surf punk fuzz on this one.

“Cum On Aileen”, this is a pure horror punk song. This one has some great drum work. “Berserker”, is up next on the record. No not the “Berserker” song from Clerks, haha! This one has almost a metal undertone to it. “Honey, It’s Okay”, I absolutely love the trumpet and vocals on this one. This is like a serial killer’s theme song!

Overall “R’Lyeh Wasn’t Built In A Decade, Hon”, should be in every punk’s collection. Personally I’d love to have this on vinyl simply for a more raw sound.  The combination of genres and influences marks this one as one of the more memorable albums of 2018. Being the old school geezer I am. My first introduction to “Horror Punk” was The Misfits – Walk Among Us, way back in 1994. I was already late to the party as Danzig had already gone solo with, “Danzing” in 1986. While my buddies were rocking out to the pop stations on FM, I was buying old albums by the Ramones and T.S.O.L. The Ramones were able to cross horror and pop punk leaving a legacy to be followed. Bands now like the Proton Packs and Livermores are continuing the tradition of mixing catchy pop punk sound with horror/scfi themes.

The Proton Packs and Livermores have teamed up to create a 7” split, “Party Time For Astronauts”! This split offers us 4 songs, 2 per artist. My personal favorites on the album, “Living On Mars” and “Panama Papers”. Both songs have catchy lyrics, mind blowing guitar riffs, and powerful drum progressions. My only regret is listening to this digitally. In fact I’ll probably buy the 7”, as I really want to hear this on vinyl. Not only for an old school sound, but the kick ass artwork by, Riccardo Bucchioni!

Sadly I couldn’t locate a video for the any songs by the Proton Packs located on the EP.  They still kick ass. Check out “Stay Puft Marshmallow Man”! They really show off they’re Ecto Punk here!
