On 2/10/2019 the first Kids Are Alright show went off like a rocket at Goosetown Tavern. If you missed it be sure and check out some pics and videos below of on our page. The talent from these bands just blew me away. This was also my first introduction to Denver based hardcore punks, Tuck Knee. We reviewed Almataha’s, “Kill The Leaders” back on 4/5/2018. Reviews for AFD and Neutral Thought will be coming in the future.

Why did I choose to write about Tuck Knee today? As soon as they stepped on stage. I felt thrown back into the 80’s hardcore scene. A powerful time in punk rock, as the American punk subculture was telling the establishment to fuck off. I felt a strong sense of pride throughout their set. I kept thinking, “Damn Denver, you’re one lucky city!” So today I ran over to their bandcamp and picked up their singles here, https://tuckkneeband.bandcamp.com/.

By the way all of their songs are currently “Name Your Own Price”, but be sure to drop at least $1 per song, so they can record more music! Keep in mind some of these videos taken are not great as the pit was pretty insane. Plus it was hard to film when I just wanted to mosh.

So let’s check out some songs!

They Way I Feel – I love the riffs, drums , and Ashmore’s vocals on this one!

Habit – This song is 1:17 seconds long, its angry, hardcore at its finest!

P.S.A – The message of this song. Don’t be an ass in the pit!

Can’t Stand For It – Per Bandcamp, “not the final version of this track full EP will be recorder in studio. Feb 2019”. I cannot wait to hear the final if this is the first!

Let me wrap this up. With 4 songs released I cannot wait to get my ear holes on some new material. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this band.

There are so many bummers about this for me.  First, I am soooo bummed I missed them at the Seventh Circle Music Collective.  Next, I am bummed it took me this long to find these guys. The final bummer of the trifecta; I will never get to hear this for the first time again.  I would be remiss if i didn’t say that I went into this a little apprehensively. I was told they were “Folk Punk.” Rarely do folk and punk go hand in hand in my book.

Sure, I will hear about the Billy Braggs of the world, but in actual application I am not a fan.  In truth, 8 songs weren’t enough for me. What a gem for the Denver music scene to have! I love the way the gritty vocals blended with the raw hillbilly vibe.  To me, music is always a background soundtrack to life and this will be in my soundtrack for awhile.

Check out what their pitch man had to say!  “First I have to tell you the human interest hook. The drummer was randomly and viciously stabbed 5 times on Colfax in Denver, Colorado by a raging psychopath in June. 8 days later he skipped out of the hospital to play the Bourbon Brawlers CD release at Lost Lake in Denver. Then returned to the hospital to finish healing up because he still had a blood clot in his lung.

That’s about as punk rock as you can get. So the Bourbon Brawlers are the Dropkick Murphys of Denver. A 7 piece folk/punk/Irish bar band for the drinking crowd very loose but still in the pocket and overall fun. Their instruments are the standard guitar and drums but also use banjo, washboard, mandolin and stand up bass. The new album is called “Befriend Your Sins” and has 10 tracks.” Doug Newville

  1. Revolution
  2. Never
  3. Irish Yoga
  4. Light It Up
  5. U.N.P.C.
  6. The Legend Of Shorts McGraw

Our Favorite Track(s): Ride Fast, Take Chances, There’s no I in TEAM but There’s a You in FUCK, You’re not a Person, You’re a Consumer

Sounds Like: The Jam, The Damned, The Melvins

The coolest thing about punk rock is the different changes it’s gone through over the years. What started out as rebellious garage rock in the 1960’s has become the music we all know and love today. It has gone through so many major changes it would be impossible to list all of them.  We’ve had bands like the The Damned, The Jam, Ramones, and Sex Pistols start the revolution away from pop music. That’s why you need to check out Left Over Sermon based out of Nederland, Colorado. Personally I’ a bit surprised. I had no clue the mountains had a thriving punk community. Last week we reviewed Drink, Drank Punk another mountain based kickass punk band.

I personally loved the tracks, Ride Fast, Take Chances, There’s no I in TEAM but There’s a You in FUCK, You’re not a Person, You’re a Consumer. This band has a great sort of jam and punk sound to it. It really made me think of London’s The Jam, except with a newer and updated sound. Leftover Sermon mixes jam, hard rock, and punk for unforgettable sound.

The band currently has a number of singles and an EP currently out. I was informed they may have some new material due out soon!  You can pick up their singles and EP here, https://leftoversermon.bandcamp.com/. Be sure to check them out on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/leftoversermon/.
