We get a ton of music submissions weekly to CPRA for reviews, etc. Sadly we don’t get time to check out each one. We have to be picky and truth be told I really dislike that. Keep in mind CPRA is purely volunteer based and volunteers are always needed. Bands one way to get our attention is to have a kick ass video. Music videos can be pricey to make, but they will help your band! And this kids, is how I found The Run Around’s, “Bombs Away”.

Buy some merch or donate so we can stay online!

The first track is indeed  “Bombs Away”. With a kick ass intro like this, you can’t help but start nodding your head. The drums are so damn good. The lyrics speak of America’s  desire to continue our never ending war machine. Why can’t we stay out of other countries’ business, https://nypost.com/2020/05/06/us-will-use-every-tool-to-get-ex-soldiers-back-from-venezuela/? Check out this awesome video below!

The next track is “Story And The Gaslight”. This track goes out to all bands who try to hit the road. I myself have never toured and have no idea what that experience may be like. Again another tack that kicks ass. Amazing bass and guitar riffs, energetic drums and great vocals by Fein. This track also pays homage to rhythm guitarist, Jeremy Kitt. Jeremy passed suddenly in 2014 leaving the band and his family at a loss. There’s also a great riff at the end of the track.

Have you ever felt you just don’t belong, because some “Normie” put you down? Have you ever felt you’re crazy? Well welcome to the club. Let’s party until the “White Coats” take us away! This track is powerful yet playful. It filled me with a sense of pride. Yeah I’m crazy, but so is my punk rock family. This anthem will get stuck in your head!

The next track is “Young And Hi”. I love this drum beat. Growing up sucked and this track reminds us how tough it can be for young punks. When I was growing up I was told I can be anything I want to be. It wasn’t until I got older I realized I went through some serious shit. The lyrics relate on so many levels and are a blast to sing with. The guitar riffs have an old school glam metal feel, and I love it.

“Go Under” is a love song. We all know what happens when the afterglow wears off. It sucks! If you’re going through this shit I really feel for you. “I was your lightning, you were my thunder, never really looked at another, but the lightning crashed, there was no more thunder, life goes on, then we go under”. I love this track in so many ways!

Well we have came to the finish line with, “Hell Meet Hand Basket”. This is hardriven political punk rock! Here we are in the USA where rednecks shoot “Robbers” in the streets and our ACAB cops slam kids to the concrete. As the track says, “We are lost, we are caged, we are anything but free”. I encourage you to read up on the so-called land of the “Free”.

In reflection I have one statement to make. Where TF have these guys been all my life? I’m adding The Run Around’s, “Bombs Away” EP as a nominee for CPRA’s best of 2020 EP. “Bombs Away” has massive potential and this band deserves to hit the national touring stage. I found myself again through music, played by someone else. You can listen on any big streamer and be sure to buy if you can.

Punk’s Not Dead, It’s Still A Teen: Amazing Flying Dumbasses & Worthless Commodity Release Surprise EP Split

Release Date: April 15, 2020

Format: Digital

Cover Art: Bobby Brown

Location: Denver, CO

Production: Recorded at Swamp Rocket Studios

Favorite Tracks: A.F.D, I’ll Get More, P.M.A, F**ck Old People, Brain Dead, and Throwing Two’s

Proving that age has nothing to do with your punk “Status” are 2 local Denver bands Amazing Flying Dumbasses and Worthless Commodity. Both bands have enjoyed local success and are known as rising stars in the Denver punk rock scene. Amazing Flying Dumbasses have raked in over 7,000 streams on Spotify with  “All Cops Are Bastards” being their most popular track. This split is Worthless Commodity’s first public release.

So let’s check out this EP split. The record begins with A.F.D. How many bands have an actual theme song? Well grab your shit and hang on cause we’re hitting the pit on this track! It clocks out at a whopping 53 seconds, I LOVE IT! The next song is “I’ll Get More”. Benny Vigil is straight up angry on this track. Mikey’s drums bring an unleashed energetic power as Connor and Noah join in on bass and guitar. Yet another track I adore!

Video Credit: Victor Valdez

The last Amazing Flying Dumbasses track on the split is “P.M.A. This is one of my favorite “AFD” tracks and only plays second to “Skate And Destroy” from their “Bruised” album. Worthless Commodity tracks are up next for the review. The first track, “F**K Old People”, comes in like a swift kick to the face. The guitar riff is addicting. The lead singer’s voice reminds me of the late Buzzcock’s singer, Pete Shelley which is incredible.

The next song is “Brain Dead” is what Skabones defines as “Pogo Worthy”! This track has a bit of more hardcore sound with a deep bass line. This is my personal favorite track from Worthless Commodity! The last and definitely not least track on the split is “Throwing Twos”. This anger driven track has kick-ass bass, drums and intense vocals. This track kicks serious ass! I cannot wait to hear more in the future from Worthless Commodity!

You can listen to the split here!

The coolest part of this split? The oldest senior band member is 18 years old. So when I said, “Punk’s not dead, it’s still a teen” it proves how amazing and badass our younger musicians can be. So your old “Dad punk” while it may be considered classic, bands like Amazing Flying Dumbasses and Worthless Commodity continue to keep the light burning bright. Be sure to check out the new split on any major music provider. This is a nominee for best local EP release!

Denver’s Barking Mad Releases New EP, “Stone Age”, Confirming They Do Indeed Kick Ass

Release Date: March 13, 2020

Format: Digital and Physical

Debut EP: On Truckstop Toilet Records

Current Lineup: (Per Facebook)
Bram- Bass & Vocals
Arj- Guitar & Vocals
JD- Lead Guitar
Brooks- Drums

Production: Recorded and mixed by Bart McCrorey at Crash Pad Studios

Cover Art: Crystal Gehrig

Favorite Tracks: Stone Age, Turn Your Back, One Life, and Blue Lies

Sounds Like: Adolescents, Zipperz, Dirty Work, The Casualties, and Dirty Work

Barking Mad has returned from the depths of Denver’s dark alleyways with “Stone Age”. We reviewed their last release, “Rampage” here. If there’s anything we need in these dark times is some brand new tunes! So let’s check out, “Stone Age”.  The first track in all it’s caveman glory is “Stone Age”. This track is heavy with early Suicidal Tendencies like guitar riffs and some great drum work. Are we as a people returning to the stone age?

The next track is “Turn Your Back”. This song has some kick ass hooks and quick changes. You will definitely wanna hit the pit on this one. My favorite song is up next, “One Life”. This is my personal gtfo of isolation song. I’m so tired of these walls I just want OUT! But alas I will stay home and save lives along with Barking Mad for now.

“I just wanna live my life and be free. I’m the only one who tells me who to be. Living my life my own fucking way.”

The 4th and final track is “Blue Lies”. Let’s be honest here even the smallest amount of police contact can destroy lives. Especially those from lower income and minority communities. What will some people say about this? “Stay out of trouble”. Yeah sure you old white bastard. The fact of the matter is “BLUE LIVES WILL DESTROY YOUR LIFE”. I 100% love this track and highly recommend it.

I reached out to Bass/Vocalist Brams Swanson for his thoughts on the new EP. “Well, I wrote it about de-evolution. It’s about how people’s thought processes are becoming more and more closed minded and ignorant. They try to shield themselves from reality and differing points of view from their own in the name of being “woke”. Only they can’t even recognize the hypocrisy spewing out of their mouths…”

With the “Stone Age” EP, Barking Mad has solidified everything I love about punk. With tracks like “Stone Age”, “One Life” and “Blue Lies” this record is a must have! I suggest you pick up the vinyl here, https://truckstoptoiletrecords.bigcartel.com/

Loser Points Release New EP “Games We Play To Hide” Out Now Via Thousand Islands Records

Pic by @Raven3Moons

Release Date: April 9, 2020

Format: Digital

Label: Thousand Islands Records

Location:
Edmonton, Alberta (CAN)

Current Lineup:
Shawn – Vocals & Guitar
Kurt – Guitar
David – Bass
Ozone – Drums

Favorite Tracks: Where Did All My Money Go?, Games We Play To Hide, Tribes, and Nostalgia

Sounds Like: The Follow Ups, The Corps, Brie Face, Let Me Downs, Sunset Silhouette, and Fourbanger

Sometimes we all need some good pop punk in our lives that mixes a little skate and poppy tenderness. Now does that mean it will be lame? Hell no! I don’t know about you guys, but I’m going nuts locked inside my own home! I cannot wait to get to my next show. Loser Points from Edmonton, CAN just dropped their new EP, “Games We Play To Hide” via Thousand Islands Records.

Before we begin, I just want to give a quick shout out to the label as we have reviewed quite a few records here, https://coloradopunkrockarmy.com/tag/thousand-islands-records/. It’s probably more than listed; however that was before I understood word tags. We also reviewed Loser Points last album, “Denial And Error” here, https://coloradopunkrockarmy.com/2018/12/12/loser-points-denial-error/. It’s no secret that we LOVE our Canadian based bands.

So let’s give, “Games We Play To Hide” a spin! The first track up is in fact titled, “The Games We Play To Hide”. I totally dig the drums on this track. The guitar and bass seem to play off each other complementing each and every hook. Lyrically this song will get burned into your brain. The next song is a personal favorite of mine, “Where Did All My Money Go”. I 100% LOVE this song. Be sure to check out the lyric video below. This song needs a proper music video!

Have you gone to a show, drank a bit too much and spent all your cash? When a relationship ends, it’s best to be with friends at a punk show! This track has serious airplay potential. The next track gets serious with “Tracers”. The tempo is fast with a strong skate punk sound. It’s heavy on bass and drums. The song could easily fit onto a Tony Hawk Proskater soundtrack.

“Tribes” is up next and continues a kick ass skatepunk tune. It’s fast and catchy with deep and powerful lyrics. I personally wonder what will become of the elitists when this Covid crisis blows over. Be sure to eat your local rich person today! The next and final song is “Nostalgia As A Drug”. I love the opening intro riff. The lyrics speak volumes for me. Often when I’m scared or anxious I’ll watch 80’s movies to help calm me down. Yet Hollywood has to go out and piss me off by “Remaking” them. So far the only remake I’ve liked has been, Mad Max: Fury Road.

In closing, Loser Point’s “Games We Play To Hide” is an EP that will only leave you wanting more. The tracks “Games We Play To Hide” and “Where Did My Money Go” have strong potential for landing on the airwaves and popular podcasts. Check em out before they blow up here, https://loserpoints.bandcamp.com/

We are in some weird and uncertain times. Covid-19 is decemating the world, our venues, and sadly our entertainers. This hasn’t stopped the Denver music scene as we continue to kick ass locked inside our fortresses of solitude. Denver Ska legends, The Dendrites will drop their new record, “Lunchin’ With The Dendrites” today! Just when things were getting hopeless, again some sun shines through the darkness. So let’s give the new release a spin!

The first track is “Snap Patch”. This track has a funky groove able bassline. This is the Dendrites we all know and love right here! Now I am no Dick Clark, but I know when I hear what feels like a hit song. That song is next with, “No Money, No Sunshine”. I’m telling you here and now this track has serious potential! This is the ultimate ska love song! I’m gonna push this one over to Tazy Phillipsz with Ska Parade.

The next track is “Dujak”. This track seems “experimental” as one might say. It’s heavy on jam riffs, before bringing in this amazing big band ska sound. All players are really hitting some great notes. “Xaasj” follows with an amazing Latin sound. I could totally see this track being featured in a movie, sexy dance scene or even an action sequence.

Now has anybody coined the term, “Surf Ska”. Well that’s one the next song, “Bottom Feeder” sounds like. The surf like bass, drums, guitar, and keys are killer.  This track is best listened to with headphones, and even better when it’s accompanied by some MJ. The final track is called, “Don’t Wanna Go”. Here’s another surprise track with vocals! I love this song so much! If you’re not dancing to this shit, you are indeed dead inside.

Overall, “Lunchin’ With The Dendrites” blew me away! Their mix of different genres from big band, northern soul and 2nd wave ska is just what I needed to make it through this Coronavirus crap. This record will put a smile on your face. I really hope we get more tracks with vocals from the Dendrites in the future. May your Friday kick ass as much as this album does! I am in a state of absolute shock as many of us struggle with the Covid-19 isolation. There’s one thing we must do, “Stay positive”! For almost all of us this sort of thing has never happened before. Our friends and families are losing their jobs, supplies are running low, and overall hope is diminished. Now is the perfect time to support our underground artists struggling to make ends meet.

The Colorado music community has banded together to help each other out with fundraising and volunteering. We may be into all different types of music, but we all share a common goal of making it through these trying times. This Friday, March 20, 2020, our merch vendor Threadless.com is waiving all fees and allowing artists to collect all proceeds. We here at CPRA will donate all proceeds from Friday to Punk Rock Saves Lives, a local non profit organization. You can find our merch here for the 3/20/2020 sale, https://cpramerch.threadless.com/.

Pueblo’s The Dead End have been nonstop supporters of CPRA since the very beginning. Their style of catchy, dark, psychobilly have made them one of my personal favorite bands.  Now it’s our turn to give back to an awesome band that fills my life with hope. They dropped their new record, “Hellbound” recently via their label, Batcave Records. So let’s give this record a spin!

The first track is “Semjaza: The Sermon”. Per, Wikipedia, “In the Book of Enoch, the watchers (Aramaic עִירִין, iyrin) are angels dispatched to Earth to watch over the humans. They soon begin to lust for human women and, at the prodding of their leader Samyaza, defect en masse to illicitly instruct humanity and procreate among them”. I don’t know about you, but Semjaza sounds like he would be fun to party with.

This song feels straight outta the late 1950’s and inspired by legendary guitarist Dick Dale, played by the infamous Creeper C. Von Los. Lucian’s bass pounds with every thump. With no feeling of dread, it’s time to start this journey down with Pickle on drums. The next rack is “Hellbound”.  I adore this track! Grab your dancing partner and step on the Hellbound train. Everything about this track is perfection!

Track 3 is “Two Bullets”. Not only is this a great dancing song, but it’s filled with an exceptional story line. We’ve all been there in a fit of jealousy and rage. Now of course we are not acting on our impulses, but with track Creeper is planning love rampage. Pickle’s drums are excellent, while the guitar has an amazing old school country steel sound.

“A bullet for her,

bullet for him,

bang bang baby,

I shot them dead”

The next song is “Young Hollow” and continues a wicked storyline. Lucian’s upright bass foretells a dark, dangerous tale before the drums and guitar join the fray. This song feels a little more on the punk rock side, while still retaining the elements of psychobilly. “Neon Moon”, follows and no it’s not the lame Brooks And Dunn version.  This is one of the slower tracks, but another fantastic narrative.

The next track is “Little Sister”, a cover written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman and made famous by Elvis Presley. The Dead End’s version is faster, heavy on bass and an overall blast. Next is another personal favorite track, “Semjaza: Occult”. This song is 100% pure psychobilly as it clocks in at a whopping 1:08.

Pic by Deadhand Art

Sadly we are down to the last new track from The Dead End, with “Pissin’ on My Leg”. By far my favorite on the record. This track is  addicting with catchy lyrics, combined with heavy bass thumps, wicked drums and perfected vocals. We can ALL relate to this song. Why are they not headlining Viva?

To sum this record up, The Dead End’s, “Hellbound” is by far their best release to date. Their mix of blues, classic country, and punk rock has been masterfully composed and fires on all hot rod cylinders. Be sure to hit the purchase button on many of the links below. Cpra hopes to get the Dead End back into Denver as soon as we are all given the go ahead!
