It should come as no surprise I am in the “dad-punk” or in my case “mom-punk” category. Because of this I am always looking for a new version of the old sound. This is the sound that got me through the angst of my youth. The insecurity of my 20’s and now to the cranky old me stage. I like to yell out the lyrics along with the band. I like a good base line that lays the foundation. I even like the old school punk guitar solo.
I want the founding fathers, Bad Brains, DK, Black Flag with all the different singers and of course OG ST. There’s a reason they are still listened to. There is a reason they have had such staying power, even with the kids today. This is Spider! They can hold their heads up and join the pantheon of old school bands that gave us the good sound. They have breathed new life into an old sound. With each song I listened to on the new EP I said, “I like this.”

By the end I loved it and started it over. This band was raised on West Coast Punk. Every element I listened for was checked off and blown out. The band has seen some ups and downs over the years. They have had some lineup changes, long breaks and an ever evolving scene. They continue to keep Spider going and melting faces on the way. Their sound not only embraces the foundation of punk, but adds something new with each song. I can’t wait for Spider to hit Denver for a show. I am also looking forward to the full length release.

I have been so excited for this review!  I thought it would write itself. Now, here I am worried I can’t do the latest release, Three Cord Cliche, justice.  What if I can’t convey that The Hacks aren’t Pop Punk, Oi, or Skate Punk, yet they are uniquely all three? Surely, I couldn’t, with my writing tell you the reader that you will want to sing along with the entire album.  This three piece puts out so much sound.

As a band, they have been so rad to me as a Colorado Punk Rock Army admin, that I wouldn’t want to let them down. Go listen to them! Better yet, go see them. They won’t disappoint, and by the end you’ll see why I found it hard to make these guys sound as good as this album with just a review.

The Hacks will Be playing The Colorado Punk Rock Army’s Happy Skanksgiving show on November 24th, 2018.  Show starts at 7pm at Tennyson’s Tap in Denver.

Favorite Tracks: Punch a Nazi in the Face

The punk movement started as a knee jerk reaction to the social climate of the late 70’s. As society became more openly defiant, the music became a hard reflection. Today’s politics in America is fraught with open racism and a praise for the alt-right. Well, punk defiance is back and as hard as ever! The Longest Hall’s Release, Don’t Panic shows how that spirit is not dead. I can listen to Punk A Nazi in the Face on repeat.

This family three piece from Florida brings hard hitting sounds with a nice harmonizing component. It’s a fast paced ride from start to finish. You can hear the hard thrash influences in the guitar on the track, Upon Deaf Ears. Zac, Adam, and Dan are brothers that formed The Longest Hall in 2017 in Florida. They have been playing together for the last decade and this 13 track offering is the culmination.

You can catch them right now in Florida and we here at Colorado Punk Rock Army are hoping for a tour that includes us.

01-Modern Monarchs
02-Punch a Nazi in the Face
03-A Timely Message From Heaven
04-Enter Cludes

No-Real-Hero---The-Forest

I have a punk playlist for the gym years old. Sometimes extra motivation is needed and the new E.P. from No Real Hero is just that.  Great driving tempo and catchy lyrics to get you going. They are a four piece made up of ex members of 69 Solution and Lobotomie Politique.  Awesome Canadian export that has all the right stuff to join the likes of Propaghandi.

Track List:

  1. Opening
  2. Comfort in Sorrow

There are so many bummers about this for me.  First, I am soooo bummed I missed them at the Seventh Circle Music Collective.  Next, I am bummed it took me this long to find these guys. The final bummer of the trifecta; I will never get to hear this for the first time again.  I would be remiss if i didn’t say that I went into this a little apprehensively. I was told they were “Folk Punk.” Rarely do folk and punk go hand in hand in my book.

Sure, I will hear about the Billy Braggs of the world, but in actual application I am not a fan.  In truth, 8 songs weren’t enough for me. What a gem for the Denver music scene to have! I love the way the gritty vocals blended with the raw hillbilly vibe.  To me, music is always a background soundtrack to life and this will be in my soundtrack for awhile.

Check out what their pitch man had to say!  “First I have to tell you the human interest hook. The drummer was randomly and viciously stabbed 5 times on Colfax in Denver, Colorado by a raging psychopath in June. 8 days later he skipped out of the hospital to play the Bourbon Brawlers CD release at Lost Lake in Denver. Then returned to the hospital to finish healing up because he still had a blood clot in his lung.

That’s about as punk rock as you can get. So the Bourbon Brawlers are the Dropkick Murphys of Denver. A 7 piece folk/punk/Irish bar band for the drinking crowd very loose but still in the pocket and overall fun. Their instruments are the standard guitar and drums but also use banjo, washboard, mandolin and stand up bass. The new album is called “Befriend Your Sins” and has 10 tracks.” Doug Newville

This is a heavy hitting EP of anthems for the bad days.  The title track Misery-Punk Ruined My Life is a fist pumping way of saying, “me too.”  We’ve all had those days where we want to get the words to come out right and it doesn’t work and we end up miserable.  Mornings and relational trepidation are the themes that round out the EP. When you’re questioning if there is more to life than this, this is the music you put on.  By the end I was ok with it all and you might say happy. I can’t wait to see what is ahead for this quartet from Scotland.

View From The Bottom is yet to be released and bummer for you, you will have to wait.  CPRA was stoked to get in on it early. This is straightforward punk sound; pre-labels and sub genres.  The Drowns are a three piece that put out a lot of sound. I’m always a fan of good bass lines and the ability to harmonize the agansty lyrics.  Boxes checked. This made want to get in the car and sing along nice and loud.
