When word dropped that Chicago-based punks, Evil Engine signed up with No Affiliation Records. I knew right away I had to check them out. No Affiliation is putting kickass bands one right after another. We reviewed many of them here. If you’re currently reading this from the toilet this, “#2” is for you! Let’s check it out!
The record kicks off with, ‘Upstanding Citizen’. This one is anthem like, encourages unity against tyranny. Kryssie’s vocals on this one are killer! There’s a kickass guitar solo that flies in for a few, but soon blends in with the excellent drums and guitar.
Next up on the track list is, ‘Degeneration’. This one has some catchy lyrics, fantastic drums, and a great message. This reminds of The Rumjacks, ‘Saints Preserve Us’ and Bad Religions, ‘20th Century Digital Boy’. The message is simple. Has technology killed a polite society? Being somewhat of an introvert I love technology, but even I realize that I have to put my phone down for my children’s sake. This song needs a music video a.s.a.p!
The third track is, ‘Sink & Drown’. Again Kryssie’s vocals lead the rest of the band in a heavy hard rock, almost metal, yet still retaining a Suicidal Tendencies punk sound. The lyrics on this one are powerful as hell.
“The planet is mine,
the people are fucked,
our greatest achievement is to get rid of us.”
The next track is, ‘Get The Gun’. This is my own personal favorite track. I have high hopes this song will hit Punk Tacos, although they tend to play it safe. This one is politically charged and sadly speaks the truth about ‘Mericas” law enforcement. This melodic anthem is catchy, yet powerful with great bass, the drums rock and heavy shreds.
The last track on this epic EP, is ‘Prisoner Of War”. This song reminded of Stiff Little Fingers antiwar song, ‘Wasted Life’. We send our soldiers out to fight in wars we shouldn’t have started in the first place. We send them to liberate countries that want nothing to do with our version of so called, “Democracy”.
Yet when the soldiers come home they become prisoners of their minds. Our mental health system in America is plain fucked. Back to my review! You’ll soon begin chanting along as the guitar screams. The bass backing lends that cutting edge. The track is wicked.
“Dying for an upper class that doesn’t even care”
Let’s face it the world is a shit show. Its bands like ‘Evil Engine” that make it something worth fighting for. So should you give this record a spin? YES, do it now. Plus you can piss off that family of yours for Thanksgiving with their album art. They’re going places and you need to be at the jumpstart.
